Uncovering the Secret to Irresistible Cinnamon Rolls: A Tribute to Pap's Old-fashioned Recipe

Updated: Apr 18

This recipe means a lot to me, Shaina, and the rest of the Furry family, and it comes from my grandfather’s cookbook. It is one of my favorite things he used to make for my sister and me every time we visited. Every time I eat these cinnamon rolls, I think of him, and all the times he would let us help him make them and how I had so much fun. Not only are they delicious and smell amazing when baking, but when you eat one, it makes all the prep work worthwhile. These cinnamon rolls are one of my true comfort foods, and I know you will enjoy them as much as I do.

Ingredients:

1

Cup of Warm Water

1

Teaspoon of Salt

½

Cup of Regular Water

1

Tablespoon of Oil

1

Package of Dry Yeast

1

Stick of Softened Butter

6

Cups of Flour

Brown Sugar

3

Eggs

Cinnamon

1

Cup of White Sugar

White Karo® Syrup

Optional Ingredients:

Walnuts

Raisins

Pecans

Coconut Flakes

Directions:

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the cup of warm water. Set it aside for later.

  2. Combine the flour, white sugar, salt, eggs, and ½ cup of regular water. Now, add the yeast mixture and mix until soft dough forms. Add more flour if the dough is still sticky.

  3. Once the dough forms, rub the oil on top of the dough and the sides of the bowl.

  4. Cover the bowl with a dish towel and set it somewhere warm to let the dough rise and double in size.

  5. Once the dough has doubled in size, take the dough out of the bowl and knead it with your fingers.

  6. Roll the dough out on a floured surface until the dough is about ½ inch thick.

  7. Once the dough is rolled out, spread the dough with the stick of softened butter generously. Now, sprinkle the brown sugar and cinnamon all over the top of the buttered dough.

  8. If you are using any of the ingredients from the optional category, this is where you now add those on top of the brown sugar and cinnamon. Add as much or as little of the optional ingredients as you like.

  9. Once, optional ingredients and brown sugar and cinnamon have been sprinkled on the dough, you will now add ½ a bottle of the white karo syrup on top of it. Drizzle evenly.

  10. You will roll up your dough into a roll. Once it is rolled up, slice the dough into 2-inch slices.

  11. Place the slices into a greased baking dish or pan. Then cover the rolls again with a dish towel and let it set to double in size once again.

  12. Once rolls have doubled in size again, bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until browned.

  13. Once the rolls are done, set them aside to cool. Once they are cool, you can serve them, or you can add icing.

  14. To add icing, you will need to combine a 1-pound box of powdered sugar, 4 tablespoons of softened butter, 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons of milk. Beat together with an electric mixer. Add more milk as needed for desired consistency.

  15. Drizzle the icing on cooled cinnamon rolls and serve.
